How to Plan a self drive Vacation
Do you like to be in a hurry on
an organized trip? I do not. And that's why I love going on a flexible
self-driving vacation. But DIY vacations can be remembered for the wrong
reasons if not properly planned.
Here are some tips for planning
your own successful car vacation.
1. Start planning early. Where do
you want to go? What do you want to see? Where you will stay If you belong to a
travel organization, take brochures and a current map detailing the area you
want to visit. The Internet is a valuable tool for planning your vacations.
Check customer reviews of hotels and points of interest.
2. Plan the driving route. Check
the places of interest you would like to see on the map. Explore points of
interest in cities such as museums, amusement parks, and shopping. Points of
interest along less-traveled scenic routes could include parks, quaint little
towns, and historic sites. Chat with each family member to see what might
interest them so everyone can contribute to vacation plans. Remember to include
time each day for lunch breaks and fresh air.
If you drive abroad, check to see
if they drive on the same side of the road as your home. You may want to rent
an automatic transmission vehicle if the road system differs greatly from what
you are used to. So you don't have to tackle gear shifting and driving on the
right side of the road!
3. Make reservations for the
places you will stay on the road. Keep track of all contact information,
confirmation numbers, and arrival and departure dates for each night. Adequate
rest is essential for a relaxed trip, so be sure to plan it every night.
4. Your vehicle will take you
several miles on your vacation, so be sure to check or change your replaced
oil, fluids, tires, and wipers if necessary. Always bring a tire jack, spare
tire, jump leads, simple tools, flashlight, and flares. Joining an auto club is
a good investment, in case you need a trailer or a new battery outside the
home.
5. Family travel supplies are
essential to enjoy the trip. A refrigerator full of fresh snacks like carrot
sticks, yogurt, cheese sticks, bottled water, and fruit will save you time and
money. Other snacks that travel well are cereal bars, dried fruit mix, animal
crackers, and nuts. Keep wipes and towels handy for quick cleanup.
6. Bring a first aid kit with
basic items: dressings of different sizes, antibiotic cream or spray, gauze,
pain relievers, and pain relievers.
7. A camera is a must on
vacation! Bring extra memory cards, power cords, rechargeable batteries, and an
extra charger or film, so you don't have to pay outrageous prices on the go for
your camera needs.
8. Bring cash, a credit card, and
a debit card. Of course, make sure your bank has ATMs along your route. A
credit card is always a good idea, as some establishments do not accept debit
or cash cards. However, for farmer's markets or small towns along the way,
money might be a good idea.
9. Other items to take on
vacations to ensure success: an excellent current atlas, a mobile phone with a
charger, emergency phone numbers for family members, insurance cards (car and
hospital) and activities to do on the road. If you are traveling with children,
bring games, books, stickers, and pencils for a successful and peaceful journey.
10. Maintain a sense of humor.
There will be times when a plan can change. And there will always be this
occasional hiccup. Before you travel, decide you will see the fun side of any
bad situation instead of letting it spoil your vacation.
A successful self-driving
vacation is upon us. Have you already started planning? Enjoy the process and
